Our History

The Isle of Man Dance Teachers Association (IOMDTA) was formed in April 1957, bringing together dance teachers from across the Island to support and promote ballroom, Latin, and classical sequence dancing. 

The association was established through the efforts of leading teachers of the time, including Douglas-based teachers Mr Jack Woods and Mr Frank Kennish, alongside Ramsey teacher Mr Eric Andrew, who became the Association’s first Chairman. Mr George Kendrick was appointed as Secretary. 

For over 68 years, the IOMDTA has played a central role in developing and maintaining the standard of ballroom dancing on the Isle of Man, providing structure, support, and opportunities for dancers of all ages. 

Today, the association is supported by 7 active dance schools and a membership of qualified teachers who are also affiliated with UK dance organisations recognised by the British Dance Council.

What We Do:

  • Representing a network of qualified teachers delivering classes across Onchan, Douglas, Ramsey, Kirk Michael, and Port Erin

Competitions & Community Impact

The IOMDTA organises a structured programme of competitions throughout the year, providing dancers with the opportunity to perform, develop, and progress within a supportive and professional environment. 

Alongside its competition calendar, the association hosts an annual charity event, raising funds for both local and national causes. Since 1999, these events have raised over £40,000, supporting organisations such as the British Heart Foundation, Motiv8 and other charities that benefit the local community.

Structure & Representation

With dance schools located across Onchan, Douglas, Ramsey, Kirk Michael, and Port Erin, the IOMDTA represents a network of affiliated teachers and schools throughout the Isle of Man.

As the Island’s recognised association under the British Dance Council, the IOMDTA provides a structured framework for ballroom, Latin, and sequence dancing, enabling dancers to take part in recognised competitions and organised events.

Whether learning for enjoyment, fitness, or competition, there are opportunities for dancers of all ages and abilities to get involved.

Progression & Success

The IOMDTA supports dancers in progressing beyond local competitions, with opportunities to represent the Isle of Man at recognised UK events.

Each year, selected junior and juvenile dancers compete at prestigious competitions such as the Blackpool Dance Festival, showcasing local talent on a national and international stage.

The Isle of Man has a proud track record of producing high-level dancers who have achieved success at the highest levels. IOMDTA dancers have been crowned British Champions in Formation Teams, Classical Sequence, and Modern Sequence across both Under 12 and Under 16 categories.

At the 2024 Junior International Dance Festival in Blackpool, Isle of Man teams achieved outstanding success, with both Under 12 and Under 16 teams securing 1st place against competitors from across England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

A designated Safeguarding Officer is in place, ensuring appropriate measures are followed to support the welfare of all participants.

All affiliated schools are expected to maintain high standards of teaching, behaviour, and care, in line with recognised guidelines.
